Florentine Heart is a study of combining different Bargello needlepoint embroidery patterns while using the same colors to create a charming heart ornament. A background can be easily added so that the project can be framed or inserted in a box top. If this is the goal, thought should be given to possibly increasing the size of the canvas which would also mean increasing the size of the stretcher bars*.

The colors used in Florentine Heart (as pictured) are lighter in value and so benefit by being stitched on a white canvas. If stronger colors are to be used, a different color of canvas could be considered. The goal is to not have canvas showing but if it does it should blend with the colors used in the threads.

The stitcher is to select 1 skein of overdyed thread and 1 skein each of 5 colors that should coordinate with the colors in the overdyed thread. The skeins should be either all floss or all silk so they are consistent in effect. The threads (floss or silk) for this project need to be able to be separated into strands so that the number of strands used can be sufficient to cover the canvas. If threads are being selected from a stash, 5 yards of coordinating colors should be more than adequate. A full skein of overdyed thread is recommended in case the stitcher would like to manipulate the colors.

Techniques to improve the laying of threads will be emphasized in this class. The stitch guide will be provided to the student electronically as a PDF.

Student to supply: 8” x 8” 18-count canvas, 8” x 8” stretcher bars and tacks, suggested threads (stranded floss or silk) and usual stitching supplies which should
include a laying tool. Highly recommended: a “C” clamp or other means of securing the working frame to a table or stand.
