Daiya Variations– Kate Festo
May Meeting Program
Description: In Japanese, “Daiya” means “diamond’, so in this piece we will work and study a series of diamond shaped patterns. Daiya Variations is divided into 5 sections, each stitched in a different traditional Japanese diamond shaped geometric pattern, all separated by undulating rows of gold stitches. This technique is stitched on Japanese silk gauze called “ro”, attached to a thin wooden frame, using two shades of green tightly twisted silk threads. All the stitches are vertical (much like bargello), and rows of straight stitches or staggered rows of step stitches are used with the two shades of green to create the distinct flowing patterns in this piece.
